About ReadabilityFormulas.com

Way back in 2004, when flip phones were the height of tech and social media meant shouting across the street, ReadabilityFormulas.com debuted as the product distributor for ReadabilityPlus and ReadabilityCalc, developed by MicroPower & Light Co.  For over a decade we delivered these tools to schools, government agencies, and businesses from Maine to Mars (okay, maybe not Mars, but you get the idea). These tools were ahead of their time, giving everyone—from teachers to government officials—the ability to score readability.

In 2017 we released the Automatic Readability Consensus Calc, which let users score their text online using 9 popular readability formulas. It became a hit with everyone—from students sweating over essays to content creators wanting their words to sparkle. This consensus calc brought together the best features of ReadabilityPlus and ReadabilityCalc in a single, easy-to-access platform. Accuracy, convenience, and just a touch of magic—what more could you ask for?

In 2023 we introduced the Readability Scoring System v2.0. This new platform offered more accurate and detailed scoring. It featured the latest research in readability, making it a powerful tool for anyone needing precise readability scores. It allowed us to reach more people, including students, teachers, content creators, and professionals, who appreciated the convenience and accuracy of our tool.

In 2024 we plan to release Readability Scoring System PLUS v3, a browser extension and standalone app for Google browsers and Android O/S. It will include batch processing, a readability editor to find wordiness, and updated formulas.

At ReadabilityFormulas.com our mission is simple: to help you say what you mean and mean what you say.

Meet the Visionary Behind It All: Brian Scott

Every great tool has an even greater brain behind it, and that brain belongs to Brian Scott. The founder, programmer, and all-around readability guru, Brian is the reason ReadabilityFormulas.com and SpanishReadability.com exist.

Brian Scott’s career in editing, writing, and graphic design spans decades, from 1992 to present. He was former principal of BSK Communications and Associates (1996 – 2004), a consulting firm that specialized in print publishing and direct mail marketing. He later founded MY BYLINE MEDIA, a digital creative agency that developed websites and e-commerce platforms. He was the founder and editor of FreelanceWriting.com (from 1998 to 2017), one of the most popular websites for writers and editors at the time, until its acquisition in 2017. Many of his articles appear at ReadabilityFormulas.com to help writers and non-writers write for their target audience. He is a lifelong learner of readability formulas and an advocate for plain English writing.

Though he’s now semi-retired (which just means he gets to code in his pajamas), Brian’s passion for clear communication is still the driving force behind our tools.

Brian’s work has been a game-changer for students struggling with essays, businesses trying to craft the perfect proposal, and anyone else who’s ever needed to make their writing more readable. As we gear up to launch PLUS v3, we’re not just building on Brian’s legacy—we’re setting a new standard for readability excellence.
